Together is better

Breaking habits on your own can be a difficult task, however quitting them with the support of a group has a greater chance of success, says Robyn Chelte.

In Lethbridge there is a place where you can both get the help to quit smoking as well as learning the importance of fitness.

Alberta Health Services have teamed up with the YMCA to do a group counselling service called Quitcore. This free seminar teaches you the importance of quitting smoking and tobacco use, by relating fitness to the habits.

Chelte has been doing Quitcore for four years and now is involved in the setup of these seminars.

“Group seminars are the best way to get people to quit, not everyone is going to quit so we try to help them whenever we can,” she said.

Chelte also states that group seminars are the best way to get results. There has been an increase in attendance for the seminars in October.

Kelsey Whalter works for the Lethbridge Addiction Services and says fitness improves the chances of quitting.

“When a person quits smoking or tobacco, it’s important to use fitness to help you get smoking off the mind. This is one of the reasons why we associated with the YMCA to help people quit,” said Whalter.

Quitcore is in the middle of their sessions for October. If you are wanting to quit smoking and are looking for more information, call Alberta Health Services or go to their website www.albertahealthservices.ca for more information to see upcoming dates in Lethbridge.
