Tragedies give an important reminder of how short life can be

Reading through the Thursday edition of the Lethbridge Herald, I came across the obituaries of the four teenagers who died in a car crash over the weekend.

The town of Magrath has been in mourning all week after the passing of four local teens. With the funerals beginning, many are left with questions of why these lives were cut short.

According to the Herald, Alberta Transportation officials are now looking at upgrading signs and devices on the gravel road where the accident occurred. The police continue to investigate, but believe that speed and driver inexperience is to blame.

Accidents like this one always conjure up memories for me. I lost a family member at a young age and similar circumstances. My cousin died suddenly in a car accident on a gravel road; he was in his early 20s.

It is devastating to lose someone you love in such sudden and unexpected fashion. I know, all too well, the state of shock the family and friends of the deceased are living in. My thoughts and sympathies go out to them.

When tragic stories like these are spread across the headlines, it is a reminder to me that life is all too short. It is important to live your life for today, as no one knows when you will not have a tomorrow.
