Valentine’s Day is coming and if you’re one of the 6.4 million Canadians who are single, you might have already skipped over this article. Perhaps it would be interesting for you to delve into some thoughts about the monetary ramifications of this lovers’ holiday.
According to Stats Canada, the amount Canadians spend on jewelry and watches from large retailers alone is around $2.8 billion each year.
Cash spent on women’s lingerie and sleepwear follows closely behind at $1.5 billion. Canadian men are only spending $624 million per year on their undergarments.
The largest expenditure of them all, believe it or not, is $3.8 billion spent on stationary, office supplies, gift wrap and party supplies.
It seems like Canada certainly knows how to party.
Another interesting fact, especially for those who are looking for love this Feb. 14, is that over half the population is single.
Plenty of fish in the sea? We’re talking 6.4 million single, never-married women and 7.4 single, never-married men to be exact. To add a cherry to the chocolate box, the number rises to a total of 17.1 million single men and women of all ages, counting those who have been married.
So even if you don’t have a date this Valentine’s Day, take the opportunity to join in on the fun and stimulate the economy with a little romantic indulgence.
In 2007, a study showed that the consumption of wine in Canada was 14.6 litres per capita. That translates to 19.5 bottles of wine per person.
If you do have a special someone in mind, you might want to consider buying roses. After all, 23.8 million stems are produced each year. That’s two million bouquets. We are also home to over 218 different confectionaries or chocolate producers and everyone knows nothing goes better with roses that chocolate for your sweetheart. Or perhaps the chocolate would best be sold to those without a sweetheart this holiday. Either way, chocolate manufacturers bring in yearly revenues of over $923 million.
Regardless of your relationship status this Feb. 14, there is plenty of fun to be had, plenty of love in the air for everyone and certainly, plenty of chocolate, wine and lingerie for all.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
