Vehicle collisions a cause for concern

During the last month, the town of Coalhurst has seen another car accident at a dangerous intersection connecting to Highway 3. The accident is one of three accidents, two of which have been fatal, that have taken place at that intersection in the last couple of years.

While the accident did occur during the frosty Canadian winter, the road conditions did not play a part in the accident.

Given the number of accidents that have taken place at that intersection, proceeding with caution should be of utmost importance for motorists.

It’s also important to note that the speed that traffic flows on Highway 3 is obviously a lot faster than other roads, so when motorists are attempting to turn onto it they should use extreme caution.

There have been a few different suggestions made that may help decrease the number of accidents at that intersection and in doing so, the number of fatalities.

One scenario involves adding a traffic light to the intersection or a number of signs that urge drivers to stay alert.

Other suggestion is to build an overpass or another street into the town so that turning onto the highway is not as frequent.

The final situation may be left at the hands of the people who use that intersection regularly. If weather is not a factor, then meticulous checking and re-checking that the road is clear before turning onto the highway needs to be done.

It is tragic that lives have been taken and steps need to take place in order to prevent future fatalities. Whether or not traffic lights or an overpass are the answer, the hope is that whoever is behind the wheel is alert and well prepared in order to drive safely.
