A new mayor has been elected into Lethbridge city council, and many citizens are now wondering, what’s next?
There were more than enough topics brought up throughout the civic election over the past few weeks, but there are many debates as to what should be considered the first and the most important project for the city to take on.
The topics have ranged from the ideas of developing plans for snow removal to recycling services and skateboard parks and everything in between that the city wants to see.
Many of the mayoral candidates had several different ideas for the development of the city and what should be considered for the next mayoral term.
Newly elected mayor Rajko Dodic had previously said his main concern for Lethbridge was the safety and well-being of the community, but also has some infrastructure concerns in the city.
Some of which include affordable housing and city transit systems which is especially important for students here who make up a large portion of the community.
Not everyone can afford to drive to school, which is what makes the transit system a vital need for this community.
In comparison to other communities Lethbridge transit systems are quite versatile already, so it is important they are maintained this way for the convenience for students and others.
Another issue being brought to councils attention is environmental impact and what we can do to increase the already numerous environmental programs around the city.
Some such as Communities in Bloom, or the Pitch-in-Program are already done regularly around the city, but some think there could be more.
Carbon emissions from idling cars are also being looked into, but according to www.lethbridgeaccountability.ca Dodic stated that this area is a ‘work in progress’ as of right now.
These are just a few brief ideas of what we as students can expect from the newest city council in the future.
From this broad and continuously growing list of ides and demands, it’s possibly going to be contradicting for the city to decide where to start but one thing is certain; we will most likely see some changes in our city which is what many are hoping for.
