Who knew sex could kill

An Australian jewel beetle anyways.

Yup, it sounds crazy but it gets even more unbelievable.

These Australian jewel beetles are being attracted to beer bottles and literally humping themselves to death.

On a ‘Charlie Sheen crazy scale’ that goes above and beyond.

According to Discovery News website, a professor at the University of Toronto says it’s a case of mistaken identity.

The beer bottles are big, browny-orange and slightly dimpled. These are the main features that attract a male Australian jewel beetle to a mate.

The male beetles, thinking they’ve found ‘the one’, actually die trying to mate with the bottles.

The professor, Darryl Gwynne, was even awarded an Ig Nobel Prize for his research. An Ig Nobel Prize is labelled as a parody of the real Nobel Prize awards. They’re intended to celebrate the unusual in science.

Well, they definitely got it right because beetles mating with bottles is highly unusual.
