Why is Oscar so serious?

After hearing of the recent death of Leslie Neilson and how he is often referred to as a comedic actor, I wondered why the Academy Awards don’t recognize comedic performances for the awards.

There is a lot of skill that goes into making someone laugh and I would argue that there’s as much skill involved in making someone laugh as there is in making someone cry.

It seems to me that when people begin to quote scenes from specific movies, it’s always scenes from comedies and not dramas that get quoted, and of course, subsequent laughter ensues.

It’s unfortunate, but it seems like actors and actresses synonymous with comedic acting tend to accept roles in dramatic movies, because that is the only way they will get nominated for an Oscar.

Imagine the movies that Jim Carrey could have done had he attempted a few more comedies rather than star in dramatic movies. The irony here is that Jim Carrey is obviously capable of dramatic roles, but it would have been nice had he done a few more comedies. Maybe The Cable Guy scared him from attempting more comedies.

C’mon, Oscar, stop dragging your golden feet and have a good laugh.
