Winter Amazing Race: Family edition

Hundreds of people of all ages came out to enjoy spring-like temperatures and bond with family at the Winter Amazing Race- Family Edition on Saturday. Organized by the Lethbridge College Be Fit For Life Centre, participants got to try their hand at several “detours” set up around Henderson Lake and fill up their “passports” for completion.

Projects co-ordinator Austin Davenport said it was a non-competitive race designed around the popular television reality show.

“If you watch the Amazing Race, they have all these “detours” they have to do before they can move on to the next stage and that’s what these games are intended to be,” said Davenport. “Everybody is going to start at a different detour, so spend about 10-15 minutes at that game and move along to the next one. Should last an hour, and then we’re going to have a meet at the end and draw for some prizes.”

Prizes were donated from several businesses around the city, all designed for future family activity. They included a family ski pass from Pass Powderkeg, archery for four at Lane Archery, golf for four at Land-O-Lakes Golf & Country Club and cross country ski rentals for next season from Alpenland Ski and Sports. The Lethbridge College Students’ Association Campus Recreation also donated four gift bags.

Davenport says the idea behind the race was “to get people active and outside with their family.”

Reese St. Goddard was in attendance with his family and a group of others. He says they completed the snow-ccer and tag stations and were enjoying the day.

“[It’s] just a good excuse to get out, have some fun and be active,” said St. Goddard. “[It] helps support the community and shows everybody else how important it is to be active.”
