World class pizza

A guest speaker at Lethbridge College has the Business students thinking about their futures. Cory Medd, owner of Two Guys and a Pizza Place, told how he opened and started his business here in Lethbridge.

Medd grew up in Brandon, Man. and is an alumnus from Lethbridge College with a major in marketing.
“There was a place on 3rd (Avenue) South which was up for sale, so me and some friends got together and borrowed money from my grandma and bought the building in May 2002,” said Medd. Two Guys and a Pizza Place opened up with no money and no employees.
In 2003 Medd bought out his partners’ share and became the sole owner. He started to do student promotions and had target markets for all ages. “Lethbridge is a fun city to do marketing in,” said Medd.
“We believe in our product. If we didn’t, I wouldn’t be letting my family eat our pizza.” In 2004 he started to get his reputation in the city.
Within the next year he renovated his building and got new pizza boxes with a new image on them.
“Our company started to become busy and I hired a general manager to help make things easier for me,” said Medd.
“Our business actually started to feel like a real business.”
In 2008 Medd decided to enter a pizza competition called the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas and ended up winning Canada’s best pizza chef.  They were also named Lethbridge’s best pizza. “Most of our employees are long term,” he said “I have always done employee of the month to recognize the works,” said Medd.
Before opening Two Guys and a Pizza Place, Medd worked at the Keg in Lethbridge then moved on to selling advertising and making guides for hotels in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.
“I worked with a graphic designer every day,” said Medd.
“I think if I had to do it all again I would get more education and have more money before starting my own business.”
