World Juniors pre-tournament action to take Lethbridge by storm

The Enmax Centre was full of action this week with announcements and games.

However, there was still no win for the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes began their week on Monday, facing the Kootenay Ice. They came up short, losing 3-2, for their ninth straight loss.

Thursday, the Hurricanes announced that a 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship pre-tournament game between the Czech Republic and Russia will be held Dec. 22 at the Enmax. Edmonton and Calgary are serving as World Junior hosts and Lethbridge has been chosen by Hockey Canada as a site for the pre-tournament game.

“I can’t imagine a more exciting sporting event than watching a hockey game between two international powerhouses, and that’s exactly what the fans will have an opportunity to experience in Lethbridge this December,” said Mayor Rajko Dodic.

On Friday, Hockey Canada also made an announcement about the players that have been chosen by the Canadian Olympic Committee to represent Canada at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Hurricane’s defenceman Reid Duke and forward Ryan Pilon were named on the roster. The first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games take place in Innsbruck, Austria Jan. 13-22, 2012.

The Hurricane’s hosted the Kamloops Blazers on Friday night. It was a back and forth tilt but the ‘Canes would once again come up short losing the game 7-4.

The Hurricanes did hold a lead of 4-3 after two goals in the second period. The lead was short lived as the Blazer’s scored two goals in 30 seconds and three unanswered to win the game.

There was not much rest for the ‘Canes as they were back on the ice Saturday night hosting the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Hurricane’s had an impressive first period on Saturday out-shooting the Wheat Kings 20-9 and taking a 2-1 lead into the second period.

Once again the Hurricanes would fail to secure a victory after surrendering three unanswered goals and losing the game 4-2.

The Hurricanes will get some time off this week before hosting the Portland Winterhawks on Friday Oct. 28.
