A partnership for the ages

Members of Lethbridge College and Ashcroft Master Builder announce new partnership with Ashcroft Design Challenge.

Many have dreamed of designing their own home, but to be able to complete this dream while still being a student is something special.

A new partnership between Lethbridge College and local home builders Ashcroft Master Builder has created a chance for students in the Interior Design Technology (IDT) program to display their skills and talents in the design world.

The Ashcroft Design Challenge gives first year IDT students the opportunity to come up with an original home design that reflects what modern living in Lethbridge looks like.

The first year students will then be paired with a second year student who will bring the design to life.

First year student Raegen Post is thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in a challenge like this and says that it will help expand her learning.

“It’s very exciting. I think it’s huge. It’s one thing to learn something in class and think that you might use it one day, but now we’re seeing the next day we might actually use this,” said Post.

This opportunity is something that has inspired the students as well.

“For the student’s, this became something that was a motivator, something that was helping to encourage them in that course and it gets them away from just being in school,” said Cheri Reitzel, Instructor in the IDT program.

While the college is head over heels for this partnership, they aren’t the only ones who stand to gain from it.

General Manager for Ashcroft Master Builder, Rodrigo Esparza, says they also receive great benefit from this partnership.

“The biggest benefit we see here is just to create those relationships in the community. We want to create the traffic into the show homes and also continue to grow with our sales.”

Esparza also says that by having a program like IDT right here in Lethbridge, it puts the city at the forefront of the design world.

These students will continue to work hard on these designs until the end of the semester when a winner will be announced at the surRENDER event on April 25.

The winning design will then be built by Ashcroft with the winning students working with the company as interns.
