The City of Lethbridge is quickly moving on from its current form of recycling.
There are three recycling depots in the city of Lethbridge located on the south near the Servus Sports Centre, on the north side close to Peenaquim Park and on the west side at the top of Bridge Drive.
The south side depot was finished in 2016 and cost taxpayers $2.8 million according to the City of Lethbridge website.
Curbside recycling is being introduced in two phases across the city. Phase 1 will begin in the spring of 2018 for a limited number of households.
The entire city will have curbside recycling by the spring of 2019.
According to the Environment Lethbridge website, the organization inspires and equips people to create widespread community action and engagement towards sustainability.
Kathleen Sheppard, executive director of Environment Lethbridge says it’s all about accessibility when it comes to recycling efforts.
“The more convenient you make recycling in Lethbridge, the more people will actually start to recycle. We are bringing in new programs such as curbside recycling in 2019 and it will have a big impact on the recycling in Lethbridge.”
Sheppard is looking forward to seeing a city-wide initiative that will improve recycling efforts of all citizens.
“I think curbside will have a positive benefit on the number of people recycling. The sooner the better.”
Richard Peterson, owns E-Futures, a residential curbside recycling company.
For those frustrated with not having curbside recycling offered by the city so far, one private business says they have always been a call away.
“Obviously with what we have right now we have the best of both worlds. If you want curbside recycling, it’s always been here, it’s been here for 15 years. If you don’t, you can go to the bins.”
