In partnership with the Royal Bank of Canada, the First Nations, Metis Inuit Day’s celebrations engaged the community with the history and knowledge at the heart of Canada’s first Nations at Lethbridge College Oct. 29.
“We want to display and share our culture, so we bring in food, elders, displays and vendors,” says FNMI recruiter Rachel CrowSpreadingWings.
Included in the celebrations are various song and dance variations by different members in the community.
“People can sometimes get shy and not ask questions, so this is an opportunity for them to ask questions,” explained CrowSpreadingWings.
FNMI services explain how the College is situated on traditional Blackfoot territory and has a long and vibrant history of encouraging and Metis and Inuit learners on campus.
Local elder in the Metis community Robert MacLeod explained how one of the major misconceptions is that people truly do not understand who the Metis are.
“We have the largest population of Metis in the province with over 96,000,” said Macleod.
Over 450 FNMI students are currently registered with the College, with the numbers growing each year. Programs such as the Cultural Support Program, recruitment and academic support are available.
“In 2015 we have no reason to continue stereotyping either side of the line. This is our chance to help break down those barriers.”
“We are all living in this country together,” concluded CrowSpreadingWings.
