Handling student stress

The beginning of the school year is usually filled with a lot of excitement, but it can also be a very stressful time for many of students.

It can take a student a while to get back into the semester, so if you are feeling overwhelmed at the start, don’t be afraid to seek out alternatives to help cope with the stress.

One of the best things you can do, is to let others know about what you are dealing with and how you’re feeling.

People generally would be interested in doing what they can to help, so looking for support is not a bad potential option. Get help from your friends and family if you require it, and don’t be afraid to take your mind off school when you need to, and enjoy the little things.

A key thing to do to help cope with the stress a student can face, is to stay organized says Harmoni Jones, health services worker.

“Accessing the learning café can go a long way, they can help you go over things like procrastination, study skills, how to take notes, and building a schedule.

Jones says that one reason a student can become stressed, is because they don’t know what they need to accomplish and they feel overwhelmed because they are unorganized.

“Stress levels are always high at the start, as students struggle to get back into the course load.” “From late November to early December we also see higher stress levels and that is usually correlated with exam stress.” Says Jones.

If you are feeling stressed, know that you are not alone.

According to A press survey, it was reported that 60 per cent of students reported severe stress interfered with other aspects of their lives.

Stress is something that nobody should be ashamed of says student Spencer Kirinas.

“Every student is undergoing some sort of stress, so you shouldn’t overthink it if you are.”

The National Institute of Mental Health also showed that by their research nearly one third of students have experienced profound depression from stress.

First year students are often unprepared for the change from high school to college, and the pressure can be immense says first year student Jaden Green.

“It’s definitely a lot to deal with starting out post-secondary for the first time, the course load and atmosphere is so much different than that of high school.”

School isn’t the only thing that causes students stress however, says Green.

“Being a first year student also comes with a lot of added pressure to make friends and get comfortable with your new environment.”

The best thing you can do is keep your head up, and work the hardest you can to be successful.

If you are able to persevere and do that, you will be on the right track to lead a meaningful life.
