Lethbridge catches the dream

Expressing and expanding on your dreams was the theme for the third annual Greatness in Leadership conference. Having none other than Martin Luther King III was the perfect collaboration to express what it means to chase a dream. Business managers, post-secondary students and high school students were in attendance to learn about what it takes to be a strong leader. King III voiced how important it is to make sure we listen to the people around us and keep our ears open.
“You’ve got to constantly be in dialogue. I mean you can’t resolve any problem if you aren’t communicating and a great leader is not just a great communicator. That’s one of the key things that must exist, but he or she must be able to build coalitions, a base of support,” said King III.

The other keynote speaker who is a hockey legend throughout Alberta and Canada expressed that no matter what path you choose you can work towards your dream and lead to help others.
“The same principles apply I think to whether it’s business or hockey or sports or arts or the dedication and discipline. These are all things that are required in all fields,” said Mark Messier who played in the National Hockey League for 25 years.
Messier also included his experiences go further than hockey and he tries to make sure his message reaches everyone.
“Be able to share those experiences to kids who are looking for a thread to hang onto and find their own passion, but the principles are all the same no matter what
people decide to do,” adds Messier.
The outreach is getting strong to youth and young leaders who will help shape the community in southern Alberta.
“[It’s about] the integration of our future leaders, our high school students, university and college students. It’s a great day of mentorship and it really gives them[an idea of] what it’s like to have careers here in Lethbridge,” said Teamworks CEO Ryan Miller who helped organize the conference.
Communication and discussion were some of the main points shared through the day and making sure that people can come together despite their differences.
“We have got to come together as a world community and figure out how to coexist,” added King III.
Next year’s conference is already in the works as Canvendish Farms was announced as the title sponsor for 2018.
