Lethbridge’s waste goes green

Sustainable energy is working its way to southern Alberta, Sarah Redekop reports.

Reducing landfill waste is one benefit a local business is having on our community. Lethbridge BioGas takes waste from farming operations and converts it to electricity. The waste they receive is converted to methane gas which goes through a machine to generate power. The plant has the capacity to power over 4,000 homes. Currently they are only powering 1,500 due to lack of interest from waste producing operations. Richardson Oilseed uses the service and Operations Manager, Dave Shannon, says it has reduced their landfill waste and saved them money. Lethbridge BioGas hopes educating the community on the benefits will generate more interest in this sustainable energy.
