Why it’s important to recognize women after International Women’s Month

March is International Women’s Month, a month where we celebrate and acknowledge the women in the community. It was established to bring awareness about women’s rights and gender equality.

Although the month is coming to an end, it is still important to acknowledge women in the community and never forget the importance of equality.

Miranda Hubbard, a game design credential coordinator at Lethbridge College, says it’s nice to have a month for women but that we should be acknowledging women every day.

“Women are typically underrepresented across so many industries and in the college environment having a woman’s voice, even just being heard in leadership meetings or anything like that, helps bring more issues to the forefront,” says Hubbard.

Cali Adrian, a philosophy major student at the University of Lethbridge, thinks a lot needs to be done for equality to happen.

“It’s important to have that representation not only to make women feel like they are a part of something, but also make them feel like they have an opportunity in the world that we are in,” says Adrian.

Sexism is still relevant in today’s day and age. Adrian feels she always has something to overcome because some people don’t take her seriously.

“I get looked down a lot on jobs that I’ve done simply because I’m a woman. I can explain something from my degree to a man and he will Google it to double check if I’m right,” says Adrian.

Adrian says what we can do for starters to accomplish equality in the community is to acknowledge and listen to what women are saying.

Hubbard mentions how the college has been great making sure everything is equal across the board, but still struggles with being recognized for her work at her other game development jobs.

“When a woman has proven she knows how to do something, don’t keep questioning her and having her proof that she can do the job she’s obviously qualified for,” says Hubbard.

She goes on to state that women are here, are participating in everything in society and need to be taken seriously outside of a single month.

With International Women’s Month coming to an end, let’s not forget how important women are and continue to acknowledge the equal importance women have in society.
